Book Talk: Archipelago – New York: The island world beyond Manhattan
September 6 @ 6:30 pm
Join the Seaport Museum as Thomas Halaczinsky shows stunning photography taken from a sailboat and tells the stories of New York islands you probably haven’t heard of, both from his book “Archipelago New York”. On a 30-foot sailboat, the photographer, author and filmmaker started from the coast of Brooklyn and went on along Manhattan, through Long Island Sound and beyond – with a bunch of historical books and maps, a camera, and an open mind. “Archipelago New York” is the literary and photographic logbook of his modern day exploration into the vast island world of New York, tracing Adriaen Block’s 1614 journey as the first European who mapped the archipelago of New York. On this 3000 nautical mile journey, Halaczinsky collected stories of Coney Island follies and a tragedy at Hell Gate, the eerie – and contemporary – mysteries of Hart Island and Plum Island, and many more, all wrapped in the narrative of sailing in quest of a sense of place.
