Every so often I am asked what an Archipelago actually is. Indeed, it is not such a common term describing a group of islands. I chose the term because Adriaen Block who in 1614 was the first European to chart the Long Island Sound, called the territory an archipelago. The ancient Greek called the Aegean Sea an Archipelago that is where Homer’s– Odyssey, a story of homecoming, plays out. So the term Archipelago is also an allegory – discovering a sense of place. That is one of the key themes in my up-coming book.
